Mastering Different Genres

Not all music is created to be equally mastered with one quick push of a button. Mastering is not a one size fits all business. Each song must be worked on as a separate project within a project because the differences in dynamics, ambiance, or sonic qualities must be handled with skilled precision settings based on that particular song.

For example with hard heavy metal music you are going to be looking for it to have that loudness with sharp clarity on guitars an vocals. Plus you want to have enough bass on drum kicks to let you know there is a bass kick in there.

With R&B you probably want to go with more of the ambience in the sound. A bit less loud, but with enough drive to keep the sound vibrant and full.

Hip HIp you wana focus on the drums making sure the kick has enough bass an treble on the snare. The vocals should be one step louder than the music so every word can be heard clearly. Bass thump is a primary factor in this genre but not too much.

With classical music a good surround sound application would suit it well since you have such a huge ensemble of artists spread out from left to right, front to back, and even corner to corner. Proper multi microphone placement is essential for recording this type of music.

There are many other genres to cover but you should get the general idea that there is no one set rule for mastering every song. Nothing is set in stone as you move from one song to another. The foundation varies for each.
