Over Compression
We know compression to be the process of lowering the volume of the loudest sounds in a song while bringing the quieter sounds up to get the sound where everything is level an jamming at the same decibel output. But, what happens when this is overdone and you use too much compression?. Let's take a look.
We talked about dynamics earlier which is what compression has an effect on. Now when you over compress, you begin to kill the dynamics so that the listener can't distinguish between the loud and the soft sounds. Everything just sounds intense an constantly loud with no sense of a silent background.
To explain it another way is that the whole mix will be made to sound flat. This is a cool effect on a drone sound on a track by it's self, but to have is on the whole song will just dull out all the natural energy of the performances that were contributed the music.
So a good rule of thumb when using compression is to exercise moderation in the use of compression. Artists will wonder what happened to all the energy put into their music if you don't, an that's not good business practice in the long run.
